Why shame doesn’t sell: What Jones Road gets right about beauty marketing

When it comes to makeup and beauty, there’s one thing I can’t stand: brands that use shame to sell. Have stubborn stretch marks? Use our cream. Bumpy acne? Try our smoothing serum. Annoying pigmentation? Try our skin-blurring-pore-perfecting-fixes-everything foundation. Not my jam at all.

So what is my jam? Brands that highlight and celebrate diversity and focus on enhancing natural features, not covering them up. Enter Jones Road, Bobbi Bown’s latest brand…

There’s so much I could say about Jones Road. They’re not about covering up, anti-aging or ‘fixing’ you. In fact, they choose to celebrate the many ways in which we show up as women — different ages, different skin tones, textures and all the rest. The products feel so nourishing, the approach is fuss-free, and for the first time in forever, makeup feels less about covering up and more about feeling good in my own skin. Special shoutout to the Miracle Balm — whatever magic is in that stuff makes my 48 year old skin look so dewy (and it feels good too!).

On my recent trip to New York, I found myself in their Greenwich Village store and I had the best experience. It was so refreshing and empowering to see a wall of imagery that celebrates just how diverse us women are (take a peek below), and my goodness, it felt so good to be seen. I even got my makeup done by the fantastic Flo (pictured with me below) and it’s fair to say that I left with a level of radiance that my jetlagged self certainly didn’t arrive with!

Thanks Jones Road for getting it right for women. You can check them out here.
